Instructors: Louisa C. Moats EdD and Deborah R. Glaser EdD
Grades K-12
Fads come and go, but science maintains what must be understood and applied for
the effective teaching of reading. LETRS creator Louisa C. Moats teams with certified
national LETRS trainer Deborah R. Glaser to conduct approximately 18 hours of
instruction that can be accessed online.
This course includes video lectures by Moats and Glaser, video modeling of instruction
drawn from 58 lessons in Teaching Reading Essentials, online exercises and activities,
and links to recommended resources, relevant research, and online text from LETRS
Foundations. Specific topics include oral language, vocabulary, comprehension,
phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, assessment, progress monitoring, and effective
teaching recipes.
The course content is appropriate for in-service professional development as well as upper
undergraduate college preservice courses. It is intended as the stepping stone into the
more comprehensive sequence of Modules 1–12 of LETRS Second Edition.
The Foundations of Reading Instruction course will be available in the Spring of 2009. If you would like to be notified when the course is available, please complete our Online Training Information form.
