This developmentally appropriate literacy and math assessment drives instruction by pinpointing which concepts each student has mastered and what he or she is ready to learn next. The Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA) grew out of decades of research at Columbia University and was patented in collaboration with MIT. Child-friendly and easy to use, the assessment helps teachers identify where students are, where they should be (according to state standards), and how to get them there (with recommended activities). The program includes:

• A computer-adaptive assessment of core early literacy and mathematics concepts
• Immediate online reports detailing performance and progress
• Recommendations for instruction and intervention

Students complete the assessment independently three to six times a year in just 20–40 minutes. Questions adjust to individual strengths and weaknesses, and interactive scenarios keep students engaged. This flexible format makes the CPAA appropriate for a wide range of children—from struggling learners to gifted/talented students. The CPAA is the only assessment of its kind covering both literacy and mathematics for Spanish-speaking English language learners.
