Early Vocabulary Connections
First Words to Know and Decode
Boost word knowledge and decoding skills right away! Early Vocabulary Connections pairs the power of decoding with explicit vocabulary instruction. Designed for early readers who are English language learners (ELLs) or struggling with significant vocabulary and decoding deficits, it is the perfect supplement to the full range of core beginning reading programs used. The 184 target words were carefully selected and organized into a 27-block scope and sequence directly aligned with the typical introduction of consonants and vowels in core early literacy programs.
This flexible intervention can be implemented in small groups within the core literacy block, limited English proficiency and literacy support classrooms, and in one-on-one instruction. Classroom teachers, resource teachers, and paraeducators will find the instructional layout clear, predictable, and easy to sequence and integrate into their core beginning reading instruction.
Basic Set includes Mastery Measures (mastery and progress monitoring assessments to trackvocabulary development), Teacher Presentation Manual, Instructor’s Manual, and CD-ROMwith Blackline Masters. Master Set includes Mastery Measures, Teacher Presentation Manual,Instructor’s Manual, and the Student Book (6 copies).
Level 2: Early Vocabulary Connections: Important Words to Know and Spell is a supplemental reading vocabulary program designed to simultaneously promote the reading vocabulary and decoding skills of first- and second-grade students who are ELLs or have significant vocabulary deficits. Level 2 builds directly on the vocabulary knowledge taught in Level 1. First Words to Know and Decode is designed for children who are just learning to read, while Important Words to Know and Spell is intended for children who are consolidating their decoding skills.
Like Level 1, Level 2 is a complete scope and sequence with all instructional stimuli. The 380 words in Level 2 are introduced in pairs to facilitate teaching and learning. The word pairs are based on semantic (e.g., office-desk, bridge-river), opposite (e.g., peace-war,question-answer), or other word relationships (e.g., much-cost, how-way, very-often).Teaching the words in pairs allows teachers to build semantic relationships within theword categories and to increase the instructional efficiency of each lesson. Pairing wordsalso helps children establish an initial conceptual network for each word.
Sets include Teacher Presentation Manual, Instructor’s Manual, CD-ROM with blacklinemasters, and Mastery Measures (mastery and progress monitoring assessments to trackvocabulary development).
