Including Samuel
Before his son, Samuel, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about the inclusion of people with disabilities. Now, he thinks about inclusion every day. Shot and produced over four years, Habib’s Emmy-nominated documentary film, Including Samuel, honestly chronicles the Habib family’s efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. The film also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents, and disability rights experts.
Including Samuel was broadcast nationwide on public television stations and has been screened in schools, universities, national conferences, and independent theaters across the country. The film was featured on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” ABC News, and in The Washington Post. Exceptional Parent magazine called it “a must-see film.” The DVD features 17 language translations, closed captioning, audio description, and extensive extras. Including Samuel Education Kit includes the DVD and a 30-page full-color educational guide containing discussion questions, inclusion myths and realities, a teacher’s view on inclusion, a primer on language around disability, action ideas for you and your community, and more.

This is a very moving documentary.
Posted by Kindra Hanson on 6th Nov 2012
, I understand the challenges of both the school and family life of having a special needs child because I have adopted two special needs children and also work as a Special Education Teacher Consultant for a public school system. This documentary brought me to tears several times. I plan on using it in my professional development presentations as I train staff on The importance of inclusion and provide them with strategies to do it successfully. Thank you for sharing your life with us so we can share it with others :)
