LETRS Second Edition
Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling
The best in professional development for teachers of reading and spelling just got better with LETRS Second Edition. Incorporating all the latest in reading research and featuring updated and expanded activities and exercises.
LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a professional development program that responds to the need for high-quality literacy educators at all levels. Developed by Louisa C. Moats, EdD, LETRS provides the deep foundational knowledge necessary to understand how students learn to read, write, and spell—and why some of them struggle.
The program's underlying principles are the groundwork in many scientific research reports, including “Blueprint for Professional Development,” Reading First Leadership Academy, U.S. Department of Education (Moats, 2002); “The Missing Foundation in Teacher Education,” American Educator (Moats, 1995); and “Measuring Teachers' Content Knowledge of Language and Reading,” Annals of Dyslexia (Moats and Foorman, 2003).
LETRS provides educators with a core understanding of language structure and helps them gain in-depth instructional information to complement their teaching practices. Rather than replacing the core basal reading program, LETRS brings deeper knowledge of reading instruction by addressing each component—phoneme awareness; phonics, decoding, spelling, and word study; oral language development; vocabulary; reading fluency; comprehension; and writing—as well as the foundational concepts that link them.
LETRS is delivered through a combination of print materials (Modules), technology (Interactive CD-ROMs), and professional development (Institutes).

We use the LETRS program extensively and strongly believe in it. We train teachers here in the LETRS program This is the second time i have ordered books, over $1000 in materials that did not arrive in time for the training. I had a room full of teachers with no manual. When I called customer service initially, they said sorry for the delay. That didn't help me one bit. Eventually they did credit me the shipping fee but as this is the second time this has happened, I am very reluctant to depend on them. If there was someplace else to order the materials, I would do it in a minute.

I purchased LETRS Moduls 1-7 for a class I am taking with Dr. Carol Tolman. The books re very useful for this coursework. Unfortunately, I ordered the books on July 9th to be overnighted, and still haven't rcvd them. Fortunately, I was able to borrow books that I will return the borrower. Today is July 20 and the issue is still not resolved.
