| |
| REWARDS (Intermediate Level) |
|
REWARDS (Intermediate Level) was designed for students in grades 4, 5 and 6 who read at or above a 2.5 grade level and have difficulty reading long words.
Based on the original REWARDS program, REWARDS (Intermediate Level) is a reading intervention program designed to teach intermediate students (grades 4-6) a flexible strategy for decoding long words and to increase their oral and silent
reading fluency.
Like the original program, REWARDS (Intermediate Level) teaches students to:
Breaks words into manageable, decodable chunks
Read long words in content-area textbooks
Read accurately, quickly and with confidence
Increase oral and silent reading fluency
Improve comprehension as decoding and fluency increases
How is REWARDS (Intermediate Level) different from REWARDS Secondary–Original Level?
Five additional lessons (25 lessons) provide increased practice opportunities
Vowels, prefixes and suffixes are introduced at a slower pace
Words, sentences and passages are written at a reading level appropriate for 4th-6th grade students
Has a stronger, more explicit vocabulary component
Provides additional emphasis on word families

| CONTENT AND DURATION
REWARDS (Intermediate Level) contains twenty-five 50-minute lessons.
Lessons 1-15 The first 15 lessons present the preskills necessary for applying the flexible decoding strategy taught in REWARDS (Intermediate Level).
Identifying word parts at the beginning and end of words
Identifying vowel sounds in words
Blending word parts into words
Correcting close approximations using context
Focusing on meaning and spelling
Lessons 16-25 All of the preskills are incorporated into the flexible decoding strategy that is the heart of REWARDS
(Intermediate Level). Students put the REWARDS strategy to work:
Reviewing and practicing preskills
Applying the decoding strategy to words in isolation, in sentences, and in content are passages
Reading expository passages to increase fluency
MEASURING PROGRESS
REWARDS (Intermediate Level) Teacher’s Guide includes decoding and fluency assessments to measure students’
progress.
The pre/posttest of word recognition/decoding:
Includes words that are taught in the program
Measures progress when administered after the program and compared to the pretest/baseline.
The generalization test of word recognition/decoding:
Includes words that have not been taught during the program
Should be administered at the end of the program to determine how well a student will apply the strategy to new
reading materials
The pre/post-fluency assessment:
Includes passages that have not been used during the program
Is administered before and after the program to establish baseline and show student growth
Empowers students and teachers to see and record fluency progress on fluency graphs.
WHO SHOULD USE REWARDS INTERMEDIATE?
REWARDS (Intermediate Level) was created specifically for students who are in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and are
reading at or above a 2.5 grade level, but are lacking word identification skills and are slow oral readers.
USING REWARDS (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL)
Because of its flexible structure and short duration, REWARDS (Intermediate Level) can be successfully used
with a variety of students including those who speak English as a Second Language and those in general and
special education, Title I, summer-school and after-school, tutoring, and pull-out programs.

| REWARDS (Secondary Level) |
|
Reading Excellence: Word Attack and Rate Development Strategies
REWARDS is the original program and is recommended for struggling students in grades 6-12 who read at or above a 2.5
grade level and have difficulty reading multisyllabic words.
REWARDS is an intense, short-duration intervention program that uses
teacher-directed instruction, requires minimal teacher training, and aligns with components of scentifically based
reading research. It explicitly teaches decoding and fluency with an integrated approach. By implementing REWARDS,
educators will help struggling readers:
Break words containing two to eight parts into manageable, decodable "chunks"
Accurately read more multisyllabic words in sentences and content-area textbooks
Read content-area passages accurately and fluently
Enhance oral and silent reading fluency
Improve comprehension as accuracy and fluency increase
Gain greater confidence in their reading ability

CONTENT AND DURATION
REWARDS comprises twenty 50-minute lessons.
Lessons 1-12 involve activities that develop preskills needed for applying the REWARDS decoding strategy:
Identifying word parts at the beginning and end of words
Pronouncing affixes and vowel combinations
Blending word parts into words
Correcting close approximations using context
Focusing on meaning and spelling
Lessons 13-20 give students the chance to put the REWARDS strategy to work:
Reviewing and practicing preskills
Applying decoding strategy to words in isolation, in sentences, and in passages
Reading expository passages to increase fluency
MEASURING PROGRESS
The REWARDS program comes with a pre/posttest and a generalization test. The pre/posttest:
Includes words that have been taught in the program
Establishes a baseline concerning a student's multisyllabic word reading skills (when used as a pretest)
Is administered after the program to measure progress (when used as a posttest)
The generalization test:
Includes words that have not been taught during the program
Should be administered at the end of the program to determine how well a student will apply strategy to new reading
materials
WHO SHOULD USE REWARDS (SECONDARY LEVEL)?
The program was created specifically for students who:
Have mastered single-syllable words but need help decoding longer words
Are in 6th to 12th grade, are reading above a 2.5 grade level, but are lacking word identification skills and
are slower oral readers than their peers
USING REWARDS (SECONDARY LEVEL)
Because of its flexible structure and short duration, REWARDS has been successfully used with a variety of students
including those who speak English as a Second Language and those in general and special education, Title I,
summer-school and after-school programs, tutoring programs, and pull-out/in programs.
