| Effective and Balanced Primary Reading Instruction |
Read Well is a unique, research-based reading program that combines systematic phonics, mastery-based learning, and rich content. From the beginning, children develop strong decoding skills, comprehension strategies, and sophisticated content knowledge. Teachers across the country are reporting higher test scores and happier, more literate students. Authors Marilyn Sprick, Lisa Howard, and Ann Fidanque designed a comprehensive program that:
- Systematically introduces and reviews skills and strategies.
- Utilizes narrative and expository content that piques learner interest.
- Introduces readers to multiple genres.
- Provides teacher/student “duet story format” and student “solo story format” to promote student reading independence
while ensuring educational and enjoyable material.
- Reading and writing activities, including story maps, story retells, and guided reports.

| Rich in Purpose and Content |
How can the content of primary reading material be simple enough for early readers, yet interesting at the
same time?
Read Well uniquely combines student-read and teacher-read text in a "duet" story format. By reading duet
stories:
- Students’ comprehension skills improve, because they hear and discuss the teacher-read part of the
material.
- Students’ decoding skills grow by practicing their part of the story—the controlled vocabulary part.
- Students become excited about reading, not only because they can decode successfully, but because the
teacher-read portions enrich the content.
Read Well stories are scaffolded to support increasingly independent reading by students. As
students gain
independent reading skills, student-read text gradually increases, and teacher-read text is gradually
withdrawn.
