Basic Writing Skills Improves Reading, Too
Posted by Phyllis Bertin on 26th Nov 2012
Teaching Basic Writing Skills works because it is a rare commodity – an expository writing program based on the latest research. It is both comprehensive and user-friendly. Best of all, it not only teaches composition, it improves reading comprehension. The focus on sentence activities develops students’ understanding of complex syntax while the writing of varied paragraph types teaches text structure. Teaching Basic Writing Skills should be a key component of any reading program.

Basic Writing Skills is superb for educators and their students.
Posted by Lydia H. Soifer, Ph.D. on 20th Nov 2012
One of the many marvels of Basic Writing Skills is how readily it teaches teachers while they teach their students. Dr. Hochman has created an available, approachable method for teaching children to write while training teachers how to teach writing! Basic Writing Skills is also about how to facilitate thinking and language as precursors to lucid writing. I have seen its effectiveness over many years, recommend it without reservation and have everyone of my staff members, educators and language therapists trained to use it. It is simply the best!

There's Nothing Basic About Writing
Posted by John mulligan on 19th Nov 2012
Teaching Basic Writing Skills continues to be the most comprehensive intervention for students who have not developed grade appropriate narrative and expository writing skills. As an Administrator who implemented the program in many elementary and middle level schools in a large urban school district ,I strongly recommend Basic Writing as an approach which can be infused across all disciplines. The targeted strategies encourage teachers to apply the process at every developmental level from Kindergarten to grade 12 and provides a platform for interdisciplinary learning across all subjects. With the onset of the elevated demands of the Common Core Curriculum the need has never been greater for students to produce high level expository responses to non-fictional and informational texts.
Basic Writing levels the playing field by allowing otherwise smart kids who are poor writers to overcome the gap in their instructional history.

Great product, extremely over priced!
Posted by Barbara Hertig on 7th Nov 2012
This is a great product! It starts with teaching writing at the sentence level and moves in a very systematic, sequential manner. Almost every teacher at my school complains about how poorly students write sentences. This book needs to be in their hands. The problem is that it is extremely over priced for what you get. What you get is a great template, but no already prepared materials. Teachers still have to prepare their own--which makes sense for integrating this instruction into content areas. The book, itself, is less than a half inch thick. The DVD could just as easily be a CD in the back of the book. If this set was sold at half the price, I would make sure that everyone of the teachers at my school had one and that everyone of my instructional coaching colleagues knew about it, too!
